My Dear People of God,
A Happy and Blessed Easter Season to All!
First of all, I would like to thank all of you for the warm welcome that I received on my installation as Bishop of Stockton. Thank you for your messages of greetings, congratulations and for your kind gifts. As I settle in and get acquainted with my new position, I continue to experience that “Valley sense” of your great welcome and hospitality, especially, as I visit the parishes during this season of Confirmations.
The Easter Season is a perfect time to celebrate the great Sacrament of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the youth of our diocese. As they are “sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit,” it is amazing to see the potential within our young people to witness to their faith. It is in witnessing to the Faith, that they will help to lift up this fallen world as “missionary disciples” of the 21st century.
As they receive the anointing of the “oil of gladness,” Holy Chrism, it is an opportunity for the rest of us to renew our relationship with the Holy Spirit, and to recall the day of our Confirmation.
By the way, “What do we remember of the day when we were confirmed? How do we recall the experience of receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation? How has this Sacrament made a difference in our lives? Have we established a personal relationship with the Gift of the Father, the Holy Spirit? Do we call upon the Spirit for his “gifts and fruits” to empower us to live as disciples of Christ or not? Do we permit the Holy Spirit to help reveal the truth about the Teaching of the Church that we might have a difficulty understanding or believing? It’s all about God’s agenda, not ours!
My friends, we need to own what has been given to us and to put it into action in order to build up the Kingdom of God in our Diocese of Stockton - in our homes, at school, at work, in our ministry, in our communities, in our everyday lives!
Again, the potential is beyond our imagining! As we approach Pentecost: allow, permit and desire that the Holy Spirit will make a difference in your life. You will be amazed! I share with you, what I have been sharing with your sons and daughters at their Confirmations: the Holy Spirit is a “God of surprises!”

Mi querido pueblo de Dios,
¡Una Feliz y Bendita Temporada de Pascua para todos!
Antes que nada, quiero agradecerles a todos por la cálida bienvenida que recibí en mi instalación como obispo de Stockton. Gracias por sus mensajes de saludos, felicitaciones y por sus amables obsequios. Al establecerme y familiarizarme con mi nuevo puesto, continúo experimentando ese "sentido del Valle" de su gran bienvenida y hospitalidad, especialmente cuando visito las parroquias durante esta época de Confirmaciones.
La temporada de Pascua es un momento perfecto para celebrar el gran Sacramento del
derramamiento del Espíritu Santo sobre los jóvenes de nuestra diócesis. Al ser "sellados con el Don del Espíritu Santo", es sorprendente ver el potencial dentro de nuestros jóvenes para dar testimonio de su fe. Es en dar testimonio de la fe, que ayudarán a levantar este mundo caído como "discípulos misioneros" del siglo XXI.
Al ellos recibir la unción del "aceite de alegría", el Santo Crisma, es una oportunidad para el resto de nosotros de renovar nuestra relación con el Espíritu Santo y recordar el día de nuestra Confirmación.
Por cierto, "¿Qué recordamos del día en que fuimos confirmados? ¿Cómo recordamos la experiencia de recibir el Sacramento de la Confirmación? ¿De qué manera este sacramento hizo una diferencia en nuestras vidas? ¿Hemos establecido una relación personal con el Don del Padre, del Espíritu Santo? ¿Invocamos al Espíritu por sus "dones y frutos" para darnos el poder de vivir como discípulos de Cristo o no? ¿Permitimos que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude a revelar la verdad acerca de la Enseñanza de la Iglesia que podríamos tener dificultades para comprender o creer? ¡Se trata de la agenda de Dios, no de la nuestra!
Mis amigos, ¡necesitamos ser dueños de lo que se nos ha dado y ponerlo en acción para construir el Reino de Dios en nuestra Diócesis de Stockton, en nuestros hogares, en la escuela, en el trabajo, en nuestro ministerio, en nuestras comunidades, en nuestra vida cotidiana!
De nuevo, ¡el potencial está más allá de nuestra imaginación! A medida que nos acercamos a Pentecostés: deje, permita y desee que el Espíritu Santo haga la diferencia en su vida. ¡Usted estará asombrado! Comparto con ustedes lo que he estado compartiendo con sus hijos e hijas en sus Confirmaciones: ¡el Espíritu Santo es un "Dios de sorpresas"!
¡Feliz temporada de Pascua para todos mientras anticipamos la gran solemnidad de Pentecostés!
